Bangladesh, July 10: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr. Shafiqur Rahman toured flood-ravaged areas of South Chattogram on Friday, wading through waist-deep water to reach families stranded by days of heavy rain and hill torrents.

The flooding has left Satkania, Banshkhali and Lohagara upazilas underwater, trapping hundreds of thousands of residents. Officials have called it one of the worst flood events the region has faced in recent memory.

Rahman arrived from the airport and went directly to Jelepara in the West Gunagari area of Banshkhali’s Kalipur union, where he inspected the damage and spoke with affected families. He later visited the Kanchana and Awchia unions in Satkania, as well as flood-hit sections of Lohagara.

At each location, Rahman distributed relief supplies and cash assistance funded through Jamaat’s own resources, according to party officials who accompanied him.

“Standing by people affected by natural disasters is a moral responsibility we all share,” Rahman told reporters following the visit. He urged wealthy individuals, social organizations and volunteer groups to contribute to relief efforts alongside government agencies.

Rahman also addressed Banshkhali’s recurring flood problems, saying the opposition would pursue “all possible measures” toward a lasting solution and would coordinate with the area’s local Member of Parliament on long-term development plans.

The visit concluded with a relief distribution event at the Queen Palace Community Center in Banshkhali’s Banigram area.

Also present were Professor Muhammad Zahirul Islam, MP for Chattogram-16; Alhaj Shahjahan Chowdhury, MP for Chattogram-15; and senior leaders from Jamaat.

Landslides triggered by the rains have caused casualties in the region, and many families remain stranded without a clear timeline for relief, according to local officials.
